This is such a cool little gem that I discovered from David I wanted to share it with you guys. Did you know that you can use Ctrl+Shift+R or Ctrl+F5 to force Firefox to reload a fresh page, ignoring the cache?

Javascript-A-Palooza Update …

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

So you guys might be noticing that I’m trying my feeble hand at Javascripting a bit more lately. It’s been a steep learning curve for me but I’ve been so excited at what I’ve been able to do with it (see Multiple Pages In One, Javascript-A-Palooza, and a little portfolio site I threw together for a friend of mine for examples of what I’ve been up to).

After putting up the portfolio site it was brought to my attention that every time anyone clicked a thumbnail for the third time (any thumbnail, any order) IE for windows would crash. (Of course all other browsers were good to go.) Grrr! I quickly went over to the other little site I have in t he works which uses this Javascripting to compare, since I thought this one was ok, and was quite distressed to discover the same problem – every third link clicked on the Services or FAQ page would crash IE. Double-grrr!

After poking around aimlessly myself for a while I sent out a cry for help to one of my readers, Brian, who had helped me out before by sharing some suave Javascript skills. Much more quickly than I could have hoped for, he solved the problem and made my scripts more streamlined in the process.

Apologies …

Saturday, February 18th, 2006

Just a quick note to let you all know that my young son has been home quite ill (he’s recovering now though) and I have been taking care of him and getting COMPLETELY overwhelmed with getting behind in work. So I’m sorry that I haven’t posted in a while but promise to do so soon. Among the many ideas floating around in my head for an article is a writeup on my own custom photo gallery that I just put together and used in this portfolio site.

Give Me a <BReak

Tuesday, February 7th, 2006

I’m just wrapping up putting together a portfolio site for a wonderful designer I know, John Malmquist of Malmquist Design. John specializes in identity, branding, packaging, and signage. Basically, John is a print guy. He thinks in inches, not pixels. And he’s looking for that kind of control over every detail of his site.

Now, don’t get me wrong … I understand and even admire John’s attention to detail and desire for fine control. I get it. I really do. But when he asked that every line of copy break at just such a place, I wasn’t sure how to handle it.

Holy Moly! My Holy Grail Example Cited On A List Apart!

Wednesday, February 1st, 2006

So, I’m looking in my site statistics this morning, glancing at the trends for January. I’m inching upwards slowly in terms of readersip. My average went from 300-350 hits per day at the beginng of the month, to about 350-450 hits a day towards the end of the month. But, what’s this number here at the end of the month? Is that … one thousand six hundred unique visitory just yesterday? What the … ?

Excitedly, I look to my referrer log to see what could have prompted this huge jump in traffic and I see that, second only to the CSS Zen Garden, most of my visitors are coming from a new article on A List Apart. I quickly scan my brain … did I leave a comment on ALA that was possibly so enticing that readers were drawn to my site in throngs? No. I did not. So that must mean that I was cited in the article itself.

I go to the article and do a search for Mani – nothing. I do a search for Sheriar – still nothing. I start hovering over every link looking for my url and I quickly find it, just two links in. The author is referring to my little old 3-column Holy Grail example, and he’s calling it a good template! Granted, he points out that source order is sacrificed, but so what!? I’m cited in A List Apart! Whoooo hoooo!!!!
