How to Make PSD Files Always Open in Photoshop, Not Preview
For my first installment of “I discover, you discover” this one is hot off the presses of about an hour ago.
OK, so it’s a small annoyance but one that irks me nonetheless. Whenever I go to open a .psd file on my Mac I always have to right-click and then choose “Open With” and then choose Photoshop. I’d simply prefer to have .psd files always open in Photoshop. I poked around a bit and figured out how to do it.
On any .psd file, right-click and then choose “Get Info” then look for the area where it says “Open With:” and choose Photoshop from the drop down. Next click “Change All” then hit “OK” at the dialog box.
That’s it!

There is also a great utility for this called RCDefaultApp.
http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/
It adds a control panel that enables you to select which apps open files by extension and mime type.

Great post. This question was plaguing me today until I found this post on Google. Just out of curiosity, does this change the association from now on, or just for the ones that existed when I made this change?

Yay Hurray! Thank you. Deep bow of respect. It worked on my mac, too. It was such a pain always having to drag pics to photoshop because clicking brought up the dreaded Preview. Very grateful.
