Ignore The Cache

This is such a cool little gem that I discovered from David that I wanted to share it with you guys. Did you know that you can use Ctrl+Shift+R or Ctrl+F5 to force Firefox to reload a fresh page, ignoring the cache?

I didn’t. But now that I do I will never have to empty my cache to see how a page behaves when it’s first loading again! Now, if only there was a shortcut for overriding the cache and history - now that would be cool!

If you want to see all the Firefox keyboard shortcuts go here.

Holding the Ctrl button while clicking the refresh /reload button works in all browser as well. (As I understand Mac users can use the Command key in place of the Ctrl key.)

The same key combos work for Internet Explorer and Opera. And I suspect it is worth a try in all other browsers as well (ie. Safari, Konqueror, etc.).

Historical Note: the force refresh command in old Netscape was Shift + F5 (or Shift + Reload Button). (Although the modern versions may not use Shift anymore since they are build from the code of the Firefox/Mozilla project, I don’t know.)

Brian: I got all excited when you said “Holding the Ctrl button while clicking the refresh button works in all browsers.” I have been having real problems with IE hanging on to my JavaScript. Sadly, this did not work for me. Even the IE developer toolbar does not always clear scripts from the cache!

I do find setting Tools - Internet Options - General - Temp. Internet Files Settings - Check for newer versions of stored pages every visit seems to fix it. This really slows this (already sluggish) browser down though.
