Video Classifieds – What You See Is What You Get

I recently had a really great experience doing some design / xhtml / css tweaking for a great up and coming web application – iMoondo.

This job was simply a pleasure from start to finish. Andrej Masiar was just so fun and easy to work with … one of those clients you want to stay on the phone chatting with after your done talking about work stuff. Andrej has some key characteristics that make up a great client that I’m going to keep in mind when trying to replicate that type of client. They are:

  • Being a good communicator - Andrej was able to easily convey what he wanted and needed and didn’t waste my time with irrelevant stuff. One of the reasons he is able to do this is because he knew what he wanted (which is the next bullet point).
  • Knowing what they want - I didn’t have to waste any time figuring out what Andrej wanted by first doing what he didn’t want, because he had already figured that out.
  • Knowing what their budget is and having a realistic understanding of what can be accomplished within it - boy is this key to a good relationship with a client! Andrej knew exactly how much he was willing and able to spend on my services, he understood how many hours that broke down into, and he understood about what I could get done in that amount of time.
  • Understanding the technology - Andrej is a developer himself and talking shop with him was a breeze. The code he had written was surprisingly easy to work with.
  • Being appreciative of your work letting you know it - It’s great to feel appreciated. When a client takes a minute to let you know that he thinks you’re doing a great job it just makes you feel good about yourself and the client, and makes you want to continue to impress him. Once a client tells you that you’re awesome it raises the bar and makes you motivated to make sure they keep that opinion of you.
  • Chemistry - it’s impossible to define but you know when you find it. If you feel like it would be fun to grab a drink with your client when the project is done then you’ve probably got it. ;~)

I’m sure I could come up with some more characteristics of a great client, but this is what jumped out at me off the top of my head. What do you look for in a client? What makes a great client for you?

Oh, and check out iMoondo - I envision it as becoming sorta like a Craigslist 2.0 (or maybe 3.0). Have fun!

Sounds like you got ahold of a good one. I imagine a lot of it has to do with Andrej also being a developer, like you said.

Is it already “3.0″ time? I was wondering how long it would take before people started bandying the term Web 3.0 around ;-)
